Correction of the shape and size of the nose or rhinoplasty

What is rhinoplasty or nose surgery?

This is one of the most widespread and oldest (first performed in 1000 BC) plastic surgery in the world.

It represents the whole part of reconstructive surgery that combines methods of surgical correction of the shape and size of the nose by replacing congenital or acquired defects in this part of the face with bone and cartilage tissue taken from the patient.

Nose surgery transforms the patient and is considered one of the most effective methods to change appearance.

Types and indications for

The nose is an organ of smell that has a very complex anatomical structure. Surgical correction of this part of the body is considered one of the most difficult plastic surgeries in the world, because the doctor not only has to change the appearance, but also preserve its functionality (in some cases such a procedure leads to curvature of the osteochondral septum, causes nasal breathing difficulties or odor loss). . Therefore, before performing it, surgeons recommend their clients to think carefully and answer the question of whether it is worth doing rhinoplasty or not (the exceptions are cases when an irregular nose shape causes breathing disorders and can cause oxygen starvation of the brain). The optimal age for implementation is 20-30 years, but in case of breathing problems or after severe physical injuries, it is implemented earlier.

Main indications:

  • disproportionate size of the respiratory organ in relation to the whole face;
  • turbine hypertrophy;
  • injuries or deformations in bone or cartilage tissue in the area of osteochondral septum, its curvature;
  • asymmetrical, forked, or overly raised nasal tip;
  • "Hump";
  • lack or difficulty breathing;
  • dissatisfaction with the result of previous plastic surgery.

There are several types of rhinoplasty that are classified depending on the purpose and technique of the procedure:

  • nasal tip plastic surgery - a method of surgical correction of the shape or removal of asymmetry (bifurcation) of the nasal tip;
  • grafting (autotransplantation) - during the procedure, the doctor enlarges and, if necessary, lengthens the small nose by transplanting cartilage tissue taken from the ear area;
  • reduction - a method of surgical intervention that aims to correct the shape and size of the turbine;
  • back alignment - removal of the hump on the back of the nose;
  • septoplasty - a surgical method for the correction of a deviating nasal septum;
  • augmentation - a surgical method of correcting the shape of the bridge of the nose to eliminate the effect of "leveling";
  • non-surgical rhinoplasty - non-surgical correction of the shape, size and proportions of the nose by injecting fillers (nose contouring plastic), use of hormonal resorptive drugs that destroy bone and cartilage tissue in the nasal septum or with the help of Aptos thread (lifting the wings and tip of the nose).

How is the preparation for the operation going?

Before the procedure, the patient should visit a plastic surgeon who will measure the respiratory organ, determine the amount of work to be done, simulate the assumed result of the operation on a computer using a special program (computer modeling helps the doctor to better understand the client's wishes) and write a recommendation for the following tests:

  • general and clinical blood test;
  • electrocardiogram (with decoding);
  • fluorography;
  • analysis for AIDS, HIV or hepatitis;
  • paranasal sinus tomography.

Two weeks before the procedure, you must stop smoking and stop taking blood-thinning medications. It is not allowed to eat or drink food 12 hours before the operation (light dinner is allowed the night before).

Before the procedure, doctors recommend good rest and sleep (this will help calm the nervous system).

Technique depending on the method

Immediately before the procedure, the client signs a contract with the plastic surgery clinic containing his consent to the operation, the price of the procedure and its type, name and surname of the anesthesiologist and plastic surgeon and information that the patient is familiar with the possibility of postoperative complications and their methods. After that, the person is taken to the operating room, the face is cleaned with lotion, the piercing is removed (if any) and, if necessary, the preoperative marking is done with a special marker. The operation takes place under general intravenous or endotracheal anesthesia and lasts 1-2 hours.

There are two methods of performing rhinoplasty: open and closed.

Open rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty is a procedure during which a doctor incises a columella (the part of the skin that lies between the nostrils), corrects the shape of the nasal structures, and finally places several cosmetic sutures on the skin. This method of surgical intervention is used to correct serious injuries and deformations of the nasal cavity and to reconstruct bone and cartilage tissue using autografts.

Closed rhinoplasty

Closed rhinoplasty is a procedure during which the surgeon makes an incision inside the nasal cavity, separates the soft tissue from the osteochondral frame, performs a series of surgeries to change the shape of the nose, and then sutures the mucosa itself with an absorbent suture material. A less traumatic method of plastic surgery, after which complications rarely occur and scars remain.

closed rhinoplasty of the nose

After a failed first operation or in case of a result that does not suit the client, doctors perform a second (secondary) rhinoplasty. This is a more complex (technical) procedure that requires certain skills and practical experience from the surgeon, is performed under general anesthesia and requires the same preparation as primary plastic surgery. This is done at the earliest one year after the previous surgical intervention.

Recovery period and results

The rehabilitation period lasts 3-4 weeks, but the patient spends one day in the hospital. Immediately after the operation, one tampon is inserted into each nostril, which the surgeon removes after three days, and a plaster is placed on the nose (it is removed after ten days). After removing the tampon, the doctor prescribes drops to the patient to remove postoperative edema and accelerate soft tissue healing. Swelling and bruising completely disappear after 1, 5-2 months. Preliminary result is estimated after 6-8 months, the final result - after 12. Scars after rhinoplasty are visible for the first three months, and then become almost invisible.

Postoperative recommendations:

  • two weeks after surgical correction, you must sleep on your back;
  • for the first few weeks you cannot visit the sauna, swimming pool, solarium, gym and do hard physical work;
  • until the postoperative wounds are completely healed, you can eat only warm food and drink hot drinks;
  • You cannot wear glasses for 2-3 months after the procedure;
  • you must not smoke during the entire recovery period.

Possible complications and contraindications

Contraindications for implementation:

  • oncology;
  • runny nose;
  • influenza, SARS;
  • active herpes;
  • diabetes;
  • atrophic rhinitis;
  • infectious diseases of the oral cavity;
  • mental disorders;
  • tuberculosis;
  • heart and kidney disorders.

Rhinoplasty is called one of the most difficult plastic surgeries in the world, during which the surgeon often removes not one, but several cosmetic defects at once, so it is associated with the development of a number of possible complications:

  • nosebleeds;
  • postoperative pigmentation;
  • swelling and soft tissue hematomas;
  • odor loss;
  • appearance of keloid scars;
  • difficulty breathing;
  • curvature of the nasal septum.

With which operations can it be combined?

Most often, nose plastic surgery is combined with septoplasty - surgical correction of the nasal septum (this procedure is sometimes called septorhinoplasty), heiloplasty (change in the shape and volume of the lips) and mammoplasty - plastic surgery aimed at correcting the shape and size of the breast. on surgery, one of which performs rhinoplasty and the other breast plastic surgery).

Estimated prices for rhinoplasty (nose surgery)

A plastic surgeon provides accurate information on how much a nose job costs. The costs of rhinoplasty include preliminary consultations, hospital stay, computer simulation of results, removal of tampons and removal of bandages. The price of the procedure depends on the type and method of surgical intervention.

Rhinoplasty is an operation that is equally popular among women and men. It helps people solve health problems, improve the appearance and proportions of the face.
